On March 7, Horseshoe Crossing High School (HCHS) in Langdon celebrated its grand opening with a ceremony attended by students, staff, school council, families, dignitaries and special guests along with Rocky View Schools (RVS) trustees and divisional staff.

“We are excited to officially celebrate the opening of RVS’ newest high school, and proud that for the first time, high school students in Langdon can attend school where they live, allowing them to learn, belong and succeed in their own community,” said Board Chair, Fiona Gilbert. “Horseshoe Crossing is a bright, beautiful facility that will provide students a great learning space for years to come.”

The ceremony included remarks from dignitaries and a performance by HCHS band students. Plaques were presented to the school by Alberta Education and the division. Leadership students also gave tours of RVS’ newest school to dignitaries and special guests.

“Horseshoe Crossing High School’s grand opening is a reason to celebrate as this new school will ensure the community of Langdon and Rocky View School division will be able to continue delivering a world-class education for Alberta students,” said Minister of Education, Demetrios Nicolaides.

HCHS opened in September 2024, welcoming approximately 326 Grade 9-11 students in its first year. The school will expand to Grade 12 for the 2025/26 school year and is projected to grow to 445 students at that time. The school’s name was selected to reflect Langdon’s community and history, while paying homage to the hamlet’s emblem, an upside-down horseshoe.

The culmination of years of community advocacy, construction of the high school in Langdon was approved in 2020 through a public-private partnership (P3). Ground was broken on the facility in June 2022.

“We know how meaningful this school is to the families of Langdon, who put significant effort into advocating the provincial government for a high school in their own community,” said Trustee Shelley Kinley, the local trustee for Ward 2. “We look forward to Horseshoe Crossing High School becoming an important pillar of this community.”

The school boasts a number of beautiful features to support students, including 25 classrooms and a large science lab. This brand-new learning facility was designed with flexibility in mind, featuring 19 retractable walls that allow learning spaces to transform as needed. Students can also take advantage of dedicated music, dance, drama, cosmetology, fabrication and mechanics spaces.

“I am thrilled that our students, staff, families and the community of Langdon could come together to commemorate the opening of our school,” said Principal, Jordan Fenton. “Today’s ceremony was a major milestone as our school develops its unique culture and school spirit. During this opening chapter for Horseshoe Crossing High School, I am particularly grateful to my amazing staff who are setting a high standard and making our school a great place to learn.”

Students are already building a culture and getting involved at HCHS. So far this year, there has been a full slate of athletics teams including volleyball, curling and basketball. The school has grown an active and energetic leadership club that supports students by organizing fun spirit events. HCHS has also started participating in co-curricular competitions, sending mechanics students to the Battle of the Techs at the World of Wheels event in Calgary this spring.
