Candidate Eligibility & Forms

This information is provided for information purposes only. This website is intended to serve as a supplement to the Education Act and the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA). The specific legislation should always be referenced for the purpose of interpreting and applying the law.

Candidates for RVS trustee must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Complete Form 29 - Notice of Intent before campaigning, fundraising or collecting donations
  • Collect signatures from 20 electors (to be submitted as part of the nomination package)
  • Pay a $100 deposit upon submitting nomination forms

Candidates must:

  • Be eligible to vote in the election
  • Have been a resident of the local jurisdiction for the six consecutive months immediately preceding nomination day
  • Not be ineligible or disqualified

You are not eligible to be a candidate if:

  • You are the auditor of the local jurisdiction for which the election is to be held
  • On nomination day you are employed by a school district or division, a charter school or a private school unless you are on a leave of absence granted under Section 22 of the LAEA.
  • You are indebted to the School Board or Municipality in which the election is being held for the amounts or timelines outlined in the LAEA (Section 22)
  • You have been convicted of an offence under the LAEA, the Election Act, the Election Finances and Contribution Disclosure Act or the Canada Elections Act in the previous 10 years.
  • Have a contract with the school division for the provision of goods and/or services as outlined in the Education Act (Section 87 (1))
  • Other criteria that may disqualify you as outlined in the Education Act or LAEA Section 21.

Advertising restrictions and regulations are governed by the LAEA (sections 152, 153 and 162).

Voting Station Conduct for Candidates, Enumerators, Agents and Scrutineers

You are responsible to ensure you, your agents, representatives and scrutineers have followed the processes outlined in the LAEA and Education Act. Conduct of representatives reflects on the candidate. Unacceptable behavior may be subject to penalties as outlined in the LAEA and Education Act.

All candidates, enumerators, agents and scrutineers are required to use and show identification upon request.

Campaign Contribution and Expense Disclosure

The LAEA outlines the Campaign Contribution and Expense disclosure procedures. Please familiarize yourself with these regulations as there are penalties for not complying. Part 5 of the LAEA can be referenced. Please note the pecuniary interest section of the Education Act (Section 85).

Nomination forms must be filed with RVS’ Returning Officer by 12 p.m. on Sept. 22, 2025 only at RVS’ Education Centre (2651 Chinook Winds Drive SW, Airdrie). Please contact the Returning Officer with any election related questions or to schedule an appointment for nomination papers.
