RVS Observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Posted on

To observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30, Rocky View Schools (RVS) schools and facilities will be closed. As part of the division's journey toward truth and reconciliation, staff and students are encouraged to use this time to reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada.

To grow the foundational knowledge of our students and staff and honour this day, members of our Indigenous Learning department have come alongside our school-based staff to support them during Reconciliation Week (Sept. 23-27). In our schools and classrooms, students have been learning about the history of residential schools, how they impacted the children and families who were affected by them, and ways we can work towards truth and reconciliation. A variety of developmentally appropriate resources for different grade levels have been made available to assist this learning. Many schools have also participated in Orange Shirt Day, which commemorates those who survived residential schools and serves as a visual commitment by our students and staff of our commitment to truth and reconciliation.

RVS schools and facilities will reopen on Oct. 1.

Land Acknowledgment

Rocky View Schools would like to acknowledge the land and recognize all the Indigenous Peoples whose footprints have marked these lands from time immemorial. Together, we can learn and honour the Ways of Knowing of Indigenous Peoples for all future generations.
